Nico Hulkenberg‘s Formula 1 future is still uncertain. Read here what options he still has left and options he already rejected.
The Hulk seems to be not very impressed about the constant discussion about his future. He put his yellow racer on P9 during the qualifying in Singapore, and after his team-mate was disqualified by the FIA for exceeding his power limits, he will even start from P8.
Meanwhile it came out that the German rejected an offer from McLaren. However, it wasn’t for an F1 cockpit, but for its new Indycar project. Hülkenberg confirmed: “Oval racing is not something that attracts me a lot. I have a lot of respect for it, but that’s not my cup of tea, so I ruled it out.”
But the chances of staying in Formula 1 are getting smaller and smaller. At Red Bull team boss Christian Horner ruled him out for his team. At Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur, who actually is a big fan of Nico, expressed himself cryptically:
“For the time being, we want to focus entirely on Antonio Giovinazzi, who is on the right path…”
So a definite decision by Alfa can only be made at the end of the season giving Giovinazzi more time to prove himself. Also, we need to take into account that Vasseur won’t decide alone, as the team is controlled by Ferrari and its Swedish co-owners who support Marcus Ericsson.
And how about Formula E? AutoBild and F1 Insider know: Jaguar expressed interest in hiring Hülk.
Hulkenberg on Formel-E opportunities:
“My mind is focused on F1”
“There was interest from people in the series, but I didn’t pursue it further, and I don’t consider it until it’s clear that I can’t continue within F1.”
For now: “The dream lives on and the fire is still blazing. “
