Once they were bitter enemies, but now they are slowly but surely becoming friends: Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.
More and more you see them both in conversations, making fun of journalists together, clapping each other off.
Mexico was a good example of them getting closer. Vettel even described Hamilton as a “magical tire masseur” or ‘tire whisperer’. Vettel joked in front of the TV cameras: “To all women on this planet: If he massages like he does his tires in Mexico, that’s magical!”
Hamilton smiled “I’m looking forward to every duel with Sebastian.” He was also one of the few who spoke out for Vettel this year:
“A four-time world champion always recovers…”
Hamilton and Vettel have dominated the last ten years. Since 2008 they have taken nine World Championship titles together. It will be ten this weekend when Hamilton achieves P8 thus achieves his sixth championship title.
Overall, both stood on the podium 55 times either first or second together, winning 136 victories together.
In Austin Vettel wants to get his second victory of the season. Hamilton aims for his next pole position. His last was at Hockenheimring. Hamilton:
“We’ve outsmarted Ferrari three times in a row – even though they’ve always held the pole position – Mercedes has just the best strategists in Formula 1. Even though I’ve often been unhappy with our strategy in the cockpit and complained on the radio. But damn, they’re almost always right with their pit stop announcements.”
