The end for Nico Hülkenberg at Renault looks more and more likely. But when one door closes, another opens. Haas indicated interest and could be a valid alternative for the German. Here are the details:
The days for Nico Hülkenberg at Renault seem to be counted. As ABMS recently reported, Renault is considering all alternatives. A possible target, Mercedes-Junior Esteban Ocon.
This all comes with the blessing of Mercedes and Toto Wolff who manages Ocon. He already mentioned in Hockenheim that he would be ready to let Ocon leave so he could return to F1. Renault could give Ocon that chance. On paper, it could be the right fit. Both French, both striving to the top.
And Nico Hulkenberg? According to Paddock insiders, Haas-Ferrari is a valid option. Team principal Günther Steiner: “We will take a look at all possibilities. Nico Hülkenberg is interesting for us.”
Nevertheless, there are a few experts who advise Hülkenberg to wait and see. Valtteri Bottas contract with Mercedes is not a done deal yet and Hülkenberg once already missed a great opportunity by signing a contract prematurely.
When Nico Rosberg resigned at the end of 2016, Hülkenberg had already tied himself to Renault, even though he was very high up on Toto’s list of possible candidates to replace Rosberg. The Austrian is known for being a fan of Hulkenberg. Hence, it’s not completely impossible that there is a chance to race for Mercedes.
Besides, at Haas Hülkenberg would team up with Magnussen. The two aren’t exactly friends. At the Hungarian GP two years ago, the two clashed verbally when Hulkenberg accused Magnussen of being the most unsporting driver on the grid. Magnussen replied and we quote him here: “Suck my balls, honey!”
