Er ist der Sohn DER Ferrari-Legende schlechthin: Jacques Villeneuve. Im SPORT BILD Sonderheft Motorsport spricht er exklusiv über Sebastian Vettel und seinen Wechsel zu Ferrari. Warum der am Ende erfolgreich sein wird? „Sie wollen, dass er sich für das Team aufopfert“, weiß der Ex-Champion. „Man gewinnt zusammen und man verliert zusammen. Darin ist Sebastian eigentlich ziemlich gut.“

„In seiner Einstellung erinnert er an Michael Schumacher“, wiederholt Villeneuve dabei, was Teamchef Maurizio Arrivabene zuletzt immer wieder sagte. „Deshalb werden die Italiener ihn lieben. Und das ist ganz wichtig bei Ferrari, weil der Druck sonst ganz schnell übermächtig wird.“ Villeneuve weiter: „Wenn Sebastian es schafft, dass die Italiener ihn lieben, werden sie ihn adoptieren. Das geht von heute auf morgen. Und ich glaube Seb wird mit seiner lockeren und humorvollen Art die Tifosi sehr schnell für sich gewinnen. Er kommt als Retter ins Team, als der Messias. Und als legitimer Erbe von Michael Schumacher.“
Dass Vettel nach vier WM-Titeln und fünf Jahren bei Red Bull das Team seines ersten großen Förderers verlässt, kann der Kanadier sehr wohl verstehen. „Sebastians Zeit bei Red Bull war vorbei“, sagt der Kanadier. Seine Begründung: „Da war dieser junge Typ mit dem großen Lächeln (Ricciardo; d. Red.). Und jeder wusste: Der ist die Zukunft von Red Bull. Sebastian wurde ihnen mehr und mehr egal. Mit 27 Jahren ist er aus Red Bull-Sicht ein Großvater. Das hat Sebastian auch gespürt. Deshalb brauchte er einen Tapeten-Wechsel. Bei Red Bull fehlten die Impulse. Nach fünf Jahren in einem Team hat man ausgelernt. Bei Ferrari fängt er jetzt mit neuer Kraft an – wie eine Jungfrau. Das wird seine alte Stärke zurückbringen – und ihn noch stärker machen.“
Villeneuve glaubt außerdem, dass Vettels Vergangenheit als Schumacher-Fan seiner Motivation jetzt nur helfen kann. „Er ist als Fan von Michael Schumacher im roten Auto aufgewachsen“, so der Weltmeister von 1997. „Deshalb musste er eines Tages dorthin wechseln. Etwas Größeres als mit Ferrari Weltmeister zu werden, gibt es für ihn nicht. Und das ist extrem positiv für seine Einstellung.“

That Vettel after four World Championship titles and five years, leaving Red Bull the Canadian can very well understand. „Sebastian’s time at Red Bull was over. There was this young guy with the big smile. And everyone knew that he was going to be Red Bull’s future. At 27, he is in Red Bull’s view a grandfather. Sebastian also has felt that. That’s why he needed to change the wallpaper. Red Bull lacked the momentum. After five years in a team you have finished learning. At Ferrari he begins now with renewed vigor – like a virgin. That’s how he can return to his old strength – and become even stronger.“
